I touched it and it felt like jelly
Until now I hadn't had to deal with anything like this, so I have a lot of questions. The plant has changed in recent weeks and I don't know whether that's a good sign or not.

That's rot from overwatering. Cut away the healthy part (if any remains) and replant.
It's not uncommon to have doubts; it's happened to almost all of us at some point. Over time I learned that touching it less usually gives better results.
